What are people's views on the best engine oil to use? I've been using 20W/50 but other old car people I know reckon the best oils to use are those specified in the handbook because the engine was designed with these in mind. Others say that these old oils were not great and that modern oils reduce the risk of engine wear etc. Am I risking engine damage by using a modern oil? Is there a better modern alternative to 20W/50? Any views welcome!

Hi there from another Aussie.

Like Chris says, the look is that of an Atlantic, and it is your car. There is a coupe being done in the States at this time, being fitted with a Buick V6 + Auto. This will outwardly be an A90, but the chap says it will also be an everyday car for him, and if it did have an original drive train, to be an everyday US driver might be frought with a few spares problems. Not having an original engine and geabox made the decision a little easier to make. Also, there is another coupe in the UK which sports a V8 emgine, and is fitted with a Morris Minor Split Windscreen. The top has been lowered about 2 or 3 inches, and it looks pretty good to me. This car was apparently salvaged from a tip, or wreckers, so one has to look at the gain.I would like to get your contact details for my International Register,as well som "before" pics. Look forward to hearing from you. All the best for your project-Peter.

We recently purchased a 1954 A40 Austin Somerset. I'm hoping someone could help me with a few questions. It is right hand drive, which I have been told is rare to be seen in the USA. Most Canadian cars were left hand steering equipped before they were shipped (from what I have been told). On the dash, to the far right, next to the glove box are 2 buttons. The upper button says "press", and is the washer fluid squirter. The button underneath is missing. It is a similar in size to the upper button, but has 2 small screw holes to each side of it. Anyone know what goes there?? It does not show in any of the dashboard diagrams that I have seen. Also, It has rearview mirrors near the running lights on the hood. One round and one square. I'm assuming one is not correct, but don't know which. I have seen both in pics of the car. Thanks for any help.

Hi everyone, hope you'll all accept a newbie to your forum. I'm hoping to buy an A40 Somerset in the next couple of days if all goes well. Regarding the posts concerning head gaskets, I did my apprenticeship in the early seventies on Renault cars but had roots and experience with BMC's prior to that and up to recent years and in all that time cannot recall a badly warped head on a B or an A series engine and not once a warped block. Please don't think I'm saying that this has never happened but I don't recall this happening on dozens of well thrashed Mini's, 1100's etc. Most of the time, gasket failure has been caused by a fault that, if corrected, would allow the engine to be carried on being thrashed after a new head gasket being fitted. Blocked rads or shut t'stats would be my first thing to check. The aluminium headed cars from the 70's onwards were a warped head waiting to happen. We used to joke that the overheat warning light on the Renault 8's and 10's was a cylinder head warning light. When it became lit on the dash, you needed a new head! Never found anything so drastic on a good old BMC engine! I have loads of old genuine workshop manuals for many BMC cars so if anyone needs info, just give me a shout.
Kind regards to all,
George.

I have a 2 door 1939 Austin 8 but sorry I have rebuilt the car with MGB running gear & a 1275 marina engine with a Metro turbo fitted so it looks like an old car with it's wire wheels but you can dirive it at 70mph on the motorway....
To make matters wosre this is the second 2 door I have had in my life time the other had a new chassis & a Daimler V8 engine but that was back in the late 1970's
I do have some parts for sale but have e-bayed most of the stuff.... I have some front wings, hood, screen, gas tank, rabiator, grill sections, front suspension & hubs rusty side panels that I stated to re-metal
